Mt Hood Winery was founded in 2002. The winery is owned by Don and Libby Bickford along with Steve Bickford. The Bickford family has been growing pears and apples in the Hood River Valley for over ninety years. In 2009 we celebrate 100 years of agriculture for our family with the opening of our new tasting room. Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo and Syrah surround the tasting room on our newly planted 20 acre vineyard.
We presented Mt Hood Winery’s first vintage in 2002, after several years of nurturing wine grapes in the Hood River Valley. We maintain meticulous pruning and winemaking practices so our quality remains top notch. We also remove the MOG (material other than grapes by hand in the field and again during processing.
Mt Hood Winery is a full production facility; everything step from farming the grapes, bottling the wine to the final sale is done by the owners and their employees. The winery currently produces Chardonnay, Pinto Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Gevurztraminer, Malbec and Syrah.
Wine grapes, especially Pinot Noir, grow well in the Hood River Valley because the weather is ideal in terms of annual rainfall and summer heat. The best wine come from the grapes that slowly mature in a long growing season. The longer season allows the grapes acidity to come into balance with the sugar necessary for the alcohol and sweetness in the finished wine. The soil in the valley is volcanic from Mt Hood itself and also the great Missoula floods. Summer brings light rain, in addition to our irrigation from the melting snow and glaciers of Mt Hood. Our wine is truly a product of the mountain.
