Abigail Merickel

Abigail Merickel was born in Minnesota in 1958. She lives and works in Hood River, Oregon and Oaxaca, Mexico. Merickel is involved in the art world as a painter, printmaker and arts educator. As a printmaker, she experiments with the following techniques: monotype, collagraph, relief (woodcut, linocut, reducation block), intaglio, lithograph and screen printing. Inspiration comes from her classical European training, steeped in art history and her appreciation for Folk Art. Vivid in color and rich in narrative, her work conveys wonder at our magical world. Abagail's adventures and the stimuli of travel, music, foreign cultures and the natural world inform her life's work as an artist. She has studied printmaking at the Taller Rufino Tamayo in Oaxaco, Mexico; Monotype workshop at Crow's Shadow with Frank Janzen of Pacific Northwest College of Art; Solarplate etching workshop with Barbara Mason at Atelier Meridien. She has a degree in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, Italy and a Masters in Teaching from George Fox University, Newburg, Oregon. She conceived of, curated and received an Oregon Cultural Trust grant for her project: Consciousness: Contemporary Printmaking in Oaxaca at the Rufino Tamayo Studio, three exhibitions and art catalog (2020-2021).

She has worked as a teaching artist in many public schools in Oregon and is an adjunct professor of art and printmaking at Columbia Gorge Community College in The Dalles, OR.

She is represented by Frame Gallery in Hood River, OR and Xante Art & Design in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The Gallery: Where Terroir Meets Talent

At Mt. Hood Winery, we believe that a great vintage and a great canvas share a common thread: they both tell the story of the land and the hands that shaped them. Our tasting room serves as a rotating sanctuary for the Pacific Northwest’s most compelling creators.

A Curated Sip

We invite you to wander our halls with a glass in hand. Every quarter, our walls transform to showcase a new resident artist, bringing fresh perspectives, vibrant textures, and local soul into our vaulted space.

From the sweeping landscapes of the Gorge to intimate, abstract expressions of the Cascadia spirit, our gallery is a tribute to the beauty that surrounds us. Like our wine, the art is seasonal, intentional, and deeply rooted in our community.

Are you a local artist inspired by the Cascades?
We are always seeking new voices to grace our walls. We host four residencies per year, offering our high-traffic tasting room as a premier stage for your work. Send us an email introducing your self and your work at: jan@mthoodwinery.com
